Hygiene in Step with Production

Precise, hygienic and reliable – couplings and brakes for the food industry

Why food technology requires specialised components

In food technology, many factors must all be right at the same time: the product, the dosing, the material flow, the speed and, of course, hygiene. Production plants often operate at high cycle rates with many repetitive start and stop movements. At the same time, they must be designed so that components can be easily cleaned and can reliably withstand the media and cleaning processes used.

For couplings and brakes, this means they must engage precisely, withstand load changes and function reliably over the long term.

A dosing movement must not continue uncontrollably. A conveyor belt must come to a safe and controlled halt when the plant stops. And a drive must not become a weak point in the line, even after many cleaning and production cycles.

Mönninghoff develops clutch and brake systems for food processing plants that combine technical precision with hygienic integration. This is not about an off-the-shelf solution, but about finding the right combination of function, design, material and protection concept.

When product quality depends on movement

Mönninghoff components can be used in various areas of food processing, for example

  • in filling and dosing systems
  • in conveyor and transport systems
  • in mixers and agitators
  • in capping, labelling and packaging machines
  • in feeding and separation systems
  • in systems for liquids, powders, granulates and pasty products
  • in format adjustment and positioning mechanisms
  • in production lines with frequent start, stop and changeover operations

Whether it’s a bottle, cup, tin, carton or bulk material: the product must be in the right place at the right time. Even minor deviations can lead to inaccurate fill levels, damaged packaging or unnecessary waste.

Drive technology must therefore do more than simply transmit power. It must control the process precisely – from feeding and dosing through to sealing and onward transport.

Requirements for couplings and brakes

Food processing plants place specific demands on their drive technology

  • Hygienic integration Components must integrate seamlessly into enclosures, safety concepts and cleaning procedures.
  • Precise switching Dosing, conveying and positioning movements must be repeatable and reliable.
  • Controlled stopping It must be possible to bring movements to a halt without unnecessary overshoot, jerking or vibrations.
  • High switching frequency Frequent start, stop and format changes must not unnecessarily shorten the service life.
  • Uniform torque transmission Constant motion supports consistent product quality and process stability.
  • Robustness under load variations Fill levels, product density, packaging sizes and material properties may vary.
  • Overload protection Blocked containers, jammed tools or foreign objects must not automatically lead to major machine damage.
  • Compact design Dosing heads, format adjustments and conveyor modules often offer very limited installation space.
  • Low-maintenance design Production lines must remain operational and allow for scheduled cleaning and maintenance.
  • Energy efficiency Where there are many repetitive movements, low energy consumption can have a significant impact on operating costs.

Hygiene and technology are not mutually exclusive. The best solution is one that integrates seamlessly into the actual production and cleaning processes without compromising precision or availability.

Engaging, metering, reliable continuous operation

Mönninghoff develops clutch and brake systems that are tailored to the medium, cycle rate, torque, speed, cleaning requirements and installation space of the food processing plant.

Electromagnetic multi-disc clutches

Electromagnetic multi-disc clutches can transmit high torques in a compact design and are suitable for frequent engagement and disengagement cycles. They are therefore of particular interest for conveyor systems, mixers and other drives that are regularly switched on and off during the ongoing production process.

Possible applications include

  • switching conveyor and transport axes
  • switching mixing or stirring drives on and off
  • operating auxiliary units
  • format and product changes
  • drives with varying loads and a high repetition rate

The clutch must be suited to the actual load profile. An empty container, a full container and a viscous product can place very different demands on the torque.

Pole face friction clutches

Pole face friction clutches  enable slip-controlled and smooth torque transmission. They can be particularly useful where drives need to start up gently, cope with load peaks or transmit varying loads in a controlled manner.

Typical applications include

  • Start-up and stop movements in conveyor systems
  • Drives for mixers and agitators
  • Dosing and feeding units
  • Applications involving sensitive products or packaging
  • Movements where jerky start-up or shutdown needs to be avoided

Where a system repeats many movements, a controlled transition is worthwhile. After all, products have a ‘memory’ too – at least in the form of splashes, deformation and rejects.

Electromagnetic toothed couplings

Electromagnetic toothed couplings enable positive-lock, precisely controlled engagement and disengagement. They are suitable for applications where a precise connection between the input and output shafts is required, with as little rotational play as possible.

Possible areas of application include

  • Dosing and filling systems
  • Positioning and separation units
  • Format adjustments
  • Sealing and labelling mechanisms
  • Synchronised movements of conveyor and working axes

A defined engagement state supports reproducible movement. This is a key factor in ensuring consistent quality, particularly in dosing and positioning tasks.

Brakes

Brakes can help to reduce overrun, hold axes in position and bring movements to a controlled halt in food processing plants. This is relevant, for example, in conveyor lines, positioning axes and dosing mechanisms.

Depending on the task, a holding brake or an adjustable brake may be suitable. With sensitive products, lightweight packaging or high speeds, it is particularly important to stop not only quickly, but also gently and consistently.

Key functions may include

  • defined positioning of containers and workpieces
  • controlled stopping during line or emergency stops
  • holding axes in place during a format change
  • reduction of overrun and vibrations
  • safe positioning during maintenance and cleaning
Hygiene-compliant means: considering the entire process

In food technology, it is not enough to describe a component in isolation as ‘easy to clean’. What matters is how it is integrated into the machine as a whole. The installation position, enclosure, surfaces, protection against product residues and accessibility for cleaning must all work together.

Depending on the specific application, the following points, amongst others, may be relevant

  • suitable materials and surfaces
  • protection against moisture, product residues and cleaning agents
  • a protected installation location away from direct contact with the product
  • good accessibility for inspection and maintenance
  • low susceptibility to wear even with high switching frequencies
  • reliable performance after numerous cleaning cycles
  • Suitable interfaces with sensors and control systems
  • Consideration of temperature and ambient conditions during cleaning

The specific design must always be suited to the plant and the overall hygiene concept. A production line for dry powders has different requirements to a plant for liquids, sticky products or frequent wet cleaning.

Tailored to suit everything from the product to the installation size

Every food processing plant has its own process profile. The appropriate clutch and brake solution depends, amongst other things, on:

  • Product type and material properties
  • Filling and dosing accuracy
  • Cycle rate and production duration
  • Torque, speed and acceleration
  • Load changes and potential blockages
  • Weight and size of the containers
  • Cleaning agents and ambient temperature
  • Available installation space and connection geometry
  • Desired braking and holding functions
  • Integration into control systems, sensor technology and monitoring
  • Required maintenance intervals and service life

Based on these factors, Mönninghoff develops a bespoke solution – from the selection of the operating principle through to the mechanical design and integration into the production line.

Test early, move to production smoothly

Prototypes and functional samples can help to test the solution under realistic conditions even before it is integrated into series production. This involves not only switching behaviour, but also the interaction between mechanics, processes and cleaning.

Possible test criteria include

  • Dosing and positioning accuracy
  • Switching time and repeatability
  • Behaviour under varying loads and product conditions
  • Holding and braking functions
  • Overload behaviour in the event of blockages or jammed components
  • Thermal stress during continuous operation
  • Integration into control systems and sensor technology
  • Material and surface requirements
  • Functionality within the intended cleaning and maintenance concept

This allows the solution to be optimised at an early stage and provides a robust foundation for series production.
