Technology with understated elegance

Precision and reliability for light aircraft and yachts – Mönninghoff drive solutions of the highest standard

The highest standards of technology, comfort and safety

With luxury goods, it is not enough simply for a function to be fulfilled. It must also feel the part: precise, smooth, reliable and of the highest quality. In small aircraft, yachts, large parasols or any other premium applications, drive and control components often operate in the background. They become noticeable above all when something is amiss – through noise, vibrations, play or jerky movement.

The technical requirements are therefore particularly demanding. Movements must be precise and as quiet as possible. Axles and control systems require reliable power transmission.

Materials, surfaces and workmanship must meet the high quality standards of the overall system. At the same time, depending on the application, requirements from the aviation, marine or other safety-critical sectors apply.

Mönninghoff develops clutch and brake systems for premium applications where technical precision and comfort go hand in hand. The solution should not draw attention to itself by being noisy. It should simply work – precisely, safely and as unobtrusively as possible.

When comfort becomes a tangible technical experience

Mönninghoff components can be used in a variety of applications within the luxury goods sector, for example

  • in light aircraft and private aircraft
  • in yachts and high-end boats
  • in steering and adjustment axles
  • in rotor, propeller and auxiliary drives
  • in on-board comfort and positioning functions
  • in lifting, folding and locking mechanisms
  • in premium vehicles and specialised mobility applications
  • in inspection and test systems for high-end drives

The actual application may be small and delicate, but its requirements are anything but. An adjustment shaft must start moving smoothly. A rotor drive must shift reliably. A holding function must engage securely even in an emergency. And a component in a visible or accessible interior should blend into the overall design as unobtrusively as possible.

Requirements for clutches and brakes

Premium applications place special demands on their drive technology

  • Precise power transmission Movements must be exact, repeatable and as free of play as possible.
  • Quiet operation Shifting and braking manoeuvres must not compromise comfort on board or in the vehicle interior.
  • Low vibration Smooth running is an essential component of perceived quality.
  • Smooth shifting Clutches must be able to connect and disconnect drives in a controlled manner.
  • Reliable holding function Axles and assemblies must be held in defined positions.
  • Compact design In yachts, light aircraft and premium vehicles, installation space is often carefully planned.
  • Low weight Particularly in aerospace applications, mass must be utilised efficiently.
  • Long service life Function and comfort must be maintained in the long term, even under intensive use.
  • High-quality workmanship Materials, surfaces and manufacturing quality must be compatible with the overall system.
  • Reliability under demanding conditions Vibrations, humidity, temperature fluctuations and varying loads must be taken into account.
  • Compliance with certification and safety requirements Depending on the application, requirements from the aviation, marine or other regulated sectors apply.

The best solution is therefore not automatically the most powerful or fastest component. It is the one that harmonises the switching behaviour, load, installation space, control system and safety concept of the entire machine.

Smooth shifting, precise control

Mönninghoff develops clutch and brake systems that are tailored to the comfort, precision, torque, speed, weight and installation space requirements of each premium application.

Electromagnetic multi-plate clutches

Electromagnetic multi-plate clutches enable controlled engagement and disengagement and combine a compact design with high repeatability. They are particularly suitable for drives where smooth shifting, varying loads and the smoothest possible power transmission are required.

Possible applications include

  • auxiliary and comfort drives in yachts
  • compact drive systems in small aircraft
  • adjustment and folding mechanisms
  • drives with frequent but as smooth as possible engagement and disengagement
  • systems with limited installation space and high requirements for smooth operation

The shifting characteristics can have a direct impact on comfort. A smooth transition is often the most elegant form of movement.

Electromagnetic toothed clutches

Electromagnetic toothed clutches enable form-fitting shifts with high precision and minimal rotational play. They may be of interest for control axes, rotor drives and other applications where position and power transmission must match exactly.

Typical applications include

  • defined connections in control and adjustment axes
  • precise engagement and disengagement of rotor or auxiliary drives
  • positioning tasks with high repeatability requirements
  • shifting operations in a compact design
  • applications where residual torque or backlash must be kept to a minimum

The positive-lock connection creates a clear mechanical state. This supports precise control and can help ensure that movements feel smooth and controlled.

Electromagnetic tooth brakes

Electromagnetic tooth brakes secure shafts via a positive-lock mechanism and can reliably maintain positions even when the system is at a standstill or in an emergency situation. Thanks to their compact design and bistable principle, they are suitable for applications where installation space and energy requirements are limited.

Possible areas of application include

  • Holding control and adjustment axes
  • Securing tilting, lifting and positioning mechanisms
  • Holding rotors or assemblies at a standstill
  • Parking and maintenance positions
  • Safety-critical holding functions in the event of a power failure

A precise holding function not only affects safety but also perceived quality. A system that holds securely and smoothly feels high-quality.

Shaft couplings

Torsionally rigid or torsionally flexible shaft couplings can precisely connect the motor, gearbox and drive shaft and, depending on the design, compensate for misalignment or vibrations.

In premium applications, they can be used, for example, for

  • rotor and propeller drives
  • compact drives in yachts and light aircraft
  • steering and adjustment axes
  • comfort and positioning functions
  • applications with high demands on smooth running and low vibration

The right shaft coupling ensures that power is transmitted cleanly and that unnecessary vibration does not reach the visible or tactile parts of the system.

A bespoke solution tailored to the machine architecture

Every automation task presents different requirements. A high-speed gripper requires a different switching behaviour to a vertical robot axis. An assembly line operating over millions of cycles places different demands on service life and maintenance than a flexible testing system with frequently changing load profiles.

Mönninghoff therefore considers not just the individual component, but the entire motion sequence. The following parameters, amongst others, can be taken into account during the design phase.

  • Torque and speed
  • Switching frequency and cycle time
  • Load profile and mass inertia
  • Desired holding and braking functions
  • Available installation space and connection geometry
  • Requirements for control systems and sensors
  • Temperature, vibration and other environmental conditions
  • Desired maintenance intervals and service life

On this basis, a clutch or brake solution is developed that not only works technically but can also be integrated effectively into the application.

Test early, move to series production faster

The earlier drive technology is incorporated into the development process, the easier it is to coordinate interfaces, switching behaviour and safety functions. Mönninghoff therefore provides support right from the concept and prototype phase.

Functional models and prototypes can be used, for example, to

  • check switching times and positioning accuracy
  • test holding functions under realistic loads
  • evaluate soft-stop and damping characteristics
  • investigate behaviour in the event of blockages or emergency stop situations
  • optimise integration into the mechanical system and control system
  • prepare the solution for continuous operation and high cycle counts

This reduces development risks and creates a robust foundation for integration into series production.
